December 10: Chosen for Relationship

All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).

Isaiah 7:14

Immanuel is a word mostly heard around Christmas time so you may not be familiar with it. Immanuel (sometimes spelled Emmanuel) means “God is with us.” It is a fitting name for Jesus as Son of God.

The Lord prophesied through Isaiah that a virgin would conceive a child. She would give birth to Immanuel. Literally, she would give birth to God with us. That’s a powerful image. This vulnerable infant is God with us. God took on human form to be with us. How amazing is that?

God chose to come as a baby, the most non-threatening human form. He wanted to be approachable. He wanted to do everything he could to make a relationship possible. Sometimes you’ll hear people refer to him as a “personal God” because unlike false gods, our God has a relationship with us. He is Immanuel, God with us.

You were chosen for a relationship with the Creator of the Universe! The only thing standing in the way of that relationship is you. Are you open to God? Do you want to have a growing, intimate relationship with Immanuel?

In the Old Testament, God told his people he would go with them. Then he said he would walk among them. Now, not only is God with us and among us, he is in us!

As Christians, we have Christ living in us. That takes Immanuel, God with us, to a whole new level. Jesus isn’t just among us or with us, he is so intimate he’s in us.

We are literally the incarnation or embodiment of Christ in this world. He lives his life through us, through our distinct personalities and gifts. That’s an intimate relationship and a remarkable privilege.

Whenever you see a reference to Immanuel, don’t just think of baby Jesus or Jesus when he was on earth. Think of all the incredible ways God is with you. He chose you for a relationship with him.

We are the incarnation of Christ in this wordl.

Lord, thank you for being Immanuel, God with us. Thank you for desiring a relationship with me and for doing everything possible to be approachable and personal. I do want a relationship with you. I struggle to recognize how real you are. Give me a greater awareness of how you are with me. Reveal yourself as Immanuel to me in ways I can understand. Thank you for expanding my understanding of who you are and what you desire to do in my life.
