You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9
Jesus was born into a poor family. Think about that for a moment. Jesus traded all the lavish riches of heaven to become a human infant born in a barn to parents in poverty. What a trade!
He gave up spiritual riches to become poor so through his earthly poverty, he could give us spiritual riches. Wow. That’s powerful. The Bible also says he “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). He became poor so we could become rich. That’s love, compassion, and grace all rolled up into one.
Is there a correlation between wealth and faith? Well, being poor does require living by faith more than being rich. That’s why the Bible says, “Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him?” (James 2:5). It seems as if the poor are given a special measure of faith and blessing from God. Throughout the Bible, God speaks favorably of the poor, as the special object of his concern.
Regardless of your financial condition, consider the ways God has made you rich in spiritual blessings. God has given us every spiritual blessing. That’s lavish riches. God has blessed you with love, forgiveness, grace, the Holy Spirit living within you, and infinitely more!
The riches of Christ are ours because Jesus was willing to trade away his own spiritual riches and comfort to become a poor human like us. We are forever grateful for his willingness to become poor so we could become rich.
Lord, thank you for the riches you have given me in Christ. You have lavished your love on me to the point of overflowing. I can’t completely comprehend what you gave up to become a poor baby, but I am grateful for your willingness to come to earth for us.
