Living by Faith, Not by Sight by KP Yohannan

Living by Faith, Not by Sight K.P. Yohannan 2014 51 pages   K.P. Yohannan never disappoints and this short book was bulging at the seams with Bible verses about faith. But it was more than a litany of Scripture. The author dug in to organize the Bible’s thoughts and explain the depth of meaning for our lives. The stand-out “a-ha” moment for me was his explanation of Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (KJV). How could faith be substance? Yohannan explains, “Faith is so real it is called substance. Substance is the material of which something is made, the building blocks of it. Your faith is the substance, the building blocks of God’s promises!” He goes on to explain the Greek work for substance, hupostasis, and how it is used in other instances in the Bible. This is a well-thought, well-documented book that is not mere...

Hope Stands Ten Reasons Why You Must Not Give Up Samuel Kee 2010 182 pages   Samuel Kee was preparing to speak at a youth retreat when he felt a burden to speak on suicide. He prepared his message and the day before the event, the youth pastor called to tell him one of the students in the group had just committed suicide. Understandably, his message struck a nerve. He told the kids “they are never without hope so long as one person is standing up for them.” That person is Jesus. Because Jesus is standing up for us, we are never without hope. Kee began sharing this message other places and experiencing the same results. His message, based on the resurrection as told in John 20-21, is “Hope Stands.” “When Jesus Christ stood up from the grave on the third day, he released a power to all those who would follow him. The resurrection releases us from the emotional conditions that trap us....

Gotta Have It! Freedom from Wanting Everything Right Here, Right Now Gregory L. Jantz (@GregoryJantzPhD) 2010 275 pages Available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions. Available from Christianbook.com for ePub. I read the Kindle edition.   When I first picked up Gotta Have It!: Freedom from Wanting Everything Right Here, Right Now, I thought it was going to be one of those stop-buying-1,000-pairs-of-shoes kind of books. And it was, but it was different than I expected. Instead of being philosophical about getting rid of stuff, it turned out to be a Christian psychology book focused on overcoming our personal addictions, or excessities, as the author calls them because they are often necessities taken to the excess. As it turned out, it was a good mistake for me to make because I got a number of things out of it just by reading it. At the end of each chapter there are several...

A Quest for More Living for Something Bigger Than You Paul David Tripp (@PaulTripp) 2007 217 pages Available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions. Available from Christianbook.com in paperback and ePub editions. I read the Kindle edition.   There really is no place for Christ in many people’s Christianity. Their faith is not actually in Christ; it is in Christianity and their own ability to live it out. –Paul David Tripp, A Quest for More, quote from Chapter Eight: In the Center of It All.   Never before have I encountered a book that stripped me of everything I believed without making me feel naked and forced me to see myself for who I am trying to be so I could better see the image of who God wants me to be. A Quest for More: Living for Something Bigger than You kept me awake at nights thinking about what I had read and how it applies to my life. It was like God...

When God Breaks Your Heart Choosing Hope in the Midst of Faith-Shattering Circumstances Ed Underwood (@edunderwood) 2008 224 pages Available from Amazon in paperback, Kindle, Audiobook CD, and Audible audio download. Available from Christianbook.com in paperback, ePub, and audiobook download. I read the Kindle edition.       But your need for safety and your fear of surprises will rob your life of the astonishing interventions with which He wants to fill your days. –Ed Underwood, When God Breaks Your Heart, quote from Part II, “The Misery.”   Ed Underwood is a remarkable man, dealing with severe lymphoma causing his skin to fall off, leaving raw, oozing sores reminiscent of the trials of Job. Those of us who have experienced faith-shattering trials know the depth of spiritual trauma ongoing crisis can cause. In his book, When God Breaks Your Heart: Choosing Hope in the Midst of...
