Who Loves Crossword Puzzles?

As a writer, I enjoy word games of all types, including crossword puzzles. But the ones in the newspaper have ridiculous clues that a normal person couldn’t possibly know. I get frustrated when I can’t fill in the blanks to complete the puzzle.

That’s why I made Crossword Bible Studies. They’re challenging enough for an adult, but simple enough for a child because of the fill-in-the-blank format. Each clue comes directly from the text of the Bible (KJV) and the verse reference is at the end of the clue. If you don’t know the answer, simply look up the verse to fill in the blank and complete your puzzle. Guaranteed success!

The Legend of Dragon Hollow

The Dragon Hollow Trilogy: 99-cents Each for Kindle #SummerReading

Summer is almost here. Everyone loves playing outdoors and time with friends, but for rainy days or when those summer blahs hit, you might want to be prepared with some good reading for your tweens.

My Dragon Hollow books are perfect for ages 9-13 (younger if they read well or if you read it to them, older if they just love fantasy fiction and dragons). Adults who have read them to their kids have enjoyed them just as much as the kids.

I’ve had people tell me their kid didn’t like to read and would never finish a book, but when they started reading The Legend of Dragon Hollow, they couldn’t put it down. And girls like the books just as much as boys because there is a strong female character.

The books aren’t dark and scary. It’s just an adventure story with lots of humor, sword fights, and dragons!

Because the Dragon Hollow Trilogy is great summer reading, I’ve dropped the price to 99-cents each for Kindle. Of course, they’re also available in paperback. And they make great gifts!

You look like you could use a good laugh. Read them for yourself, whether you have kids or not!

Introducing Bipolar Alien Monster

The artist known as I.M. Bipolar has graciously allowed me to share this cartoon of Bipolar Alien Monster. The Alien Monster character puts a lighthearted face on what it’s like to live with bipolar disorder. In addition to the extreme highs and lows of one’s own emotions, a person with bipolar disorder must deal with the misconceptions of others and countless obstacles to “normal” living. These add up to make a person with bipolar disorder feel foreign to the world like an alien and out of control like a monster. Thus, Alien Monster.

In this episode, Alien Monster clings to social media for a sense of acceptance and affirmation, but finds none.

I Had a Black Dog. His Name Was Depression.

Some people say Winston Churchill was the first person to call his depression a black dog that followed him everywhere. Others say the expression preceded Churchill. Whichever the case, the black dog of depression has been around for generations now. And this old dog is up to the same old tricks.

The black dog will train you, if you let it. But it’s better if you train the black dog.

This video is really well-done, so I can’t help but mention that the artist and author also has a book:Living with a Black Dog: His Name Is Depression by Matthew Johnstone.

Of course, faith in God helps us work through depression. God is always ready to help us. Feeling depressed? Make this your prayer:

Come quickly, Lord, and answer me, for my depression deepens. Don’t turn away from me, or I will die. Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.

Psalm 143:7-8

Z Is for Zealous

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

1 Corinthians 15:58

When I begin to feel tired and discouraged it’s a warning light to me. I’m trying to do things on my own effort instead of relying on God. Jesus said His burden was light, so if I feel burdened, I’m carrying more than He intended.

By contrast, if I follow God’s lead and let Him carry the weight, I find myself rested and refreshed. Then I kick myself for not identifying the problem sooner. Then I find new zeal for the work He has given me. My work becomes a joy and I face each task with enthusiasm. I’m serving the Lord and my work has a purpose!

Take time to check your burden today.

Y Is for Your Unique Growth

And what you put in the ground is not the plant that will grow, but only a bare seed of wheat or whatever you are planting. Then God gives it the new body he wants it to have. A different plant grows from each kind of seed.

1 Corinthians 15:37-38

God causes us to grow into exactly who He wants us to become. God nurtures us to become someone new. We grow and change at His pace, according to His plan. We cannot cause ourselves to grow. We merely cooperate with God by receiving the resources He places in our lives for growth. Family, friends, teachers, and even people we don’t like can be part of the process God uses to create growth and change.

Just as a plant no longer resembles the seed, our lives will no longer resemble who we once were. We are growing to become more like Jesus as we allow Him to live through us.

X Is for ‘Xcellent Thoughts

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. . . . Then the God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:8-9

We’ve talked a lot about change from the inside out. But what does that really look like? What is God’s role and what is my role? Generally, your role is to cooperate with God, always giving Him permission to work in your life in all areas. There’s little to do but to focus on God (not your actions or attitudes).

God won’t think your thoughts for you. You can choose to access your Spirit-controlled mind or you can choose to slide into worldly thinking or the thoughts of your old sinful self.

It’s not so much that you’re doing anything to create change, as it is a matter of participating in change by following the lead of the Spirit within you.

W Is for Work in Progress

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Philippians 1:6

In our microwave culture, we want things fast. If it’s not quick enough, we become impatient. We’re like the person who prayed, “Lord, give me patience and I want it now!”

Sometimes God changes us in a moment. I’ve seen it in my own life. Other times, change is a process. We live our entire lives under construction. God is at work in our lives, whether we recognize it or not.

We are a work in progress. God is changing us from the inside out and He will continue working on us until it is finished—and that won’t happen until we meet Jesus.

Accept the process. Trust the Master Planner.

V Is for Victory

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

Romans 8:37

Have you ever seen a sports event in which one team eeked out a narrow win? Other times a team may have a decisive win by a large margin. Sports teams would say, “A win is a win.” But that’s not how God works.

When we work out things on our own, we might eek out a narrow win, if we don’t outright fail on our own strength. But when we play on God’s team, following His lead, He brings about overwhelming victory. God doesn’t eek out a win. He has a decisive victory.

How does this change us from the inside out? Victory is ours through Christ. As we focus on Him, Christ brings about remarkable changes in our lives. Change might be gradual, but it will be remarkable.

V is for Victory

U Is for Unlimited Resources

I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.

Ephesians 3:16

As you might expect, the Creator of the Universe has unlimited resources. And just as His resurrection power is at work in our lives, His glorious resources are available for us, too.

We don’t have to figure things out and come up with the tools and resources to do everything on our own. Instead, we can rely on God’s resources.

God wants to use His unlimited resources to empower us with inner strength. And, of course, this inner strength is found through His Spirit within us.

Let God change you from the inside out by first relying on His resources at work within you. Then, His external resources will follow as needed.

U is for Unlimited Resources
