Are you hiding from God? Do you fear that the shame of your depression keeps you from God? Have you been told depression is a sin or a lack of faith? It’s not. God understands the darkness you feel. He feels your pain. Even Jesus felt great despair in the Garden of Gethsemane.
When the darkness of depression closes in, I call these words to mind:
I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
There is no depression so dark that it can keep God away. The darkness of depression is like a dense fog or cloud around our lives, but it cannot hide us from God. We are not lost or out of His sight. We are never beyond his reach. He is with us in the deepest darkness. He knows exactly where you are and what you’re experiencing because He is with you in all of it.
When you’re feeling depressed, recall these words: “Even in darkness I cannot hide from you.” Remember that depression cannot separate you from God. Reach out to God for comfort, reassurance of His love, and guidance in the darkness. Day or night, it’s all the same to Him. Depression or delight, it does not change His presence or His love for you.
