December 19: Have You Ever Had a Divine Appointment?

At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,

“Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised.

I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people.

He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”

Luke 2:25-35

Have you ever had a divine appointment? Have you ever been certain that God orchestrated events to get you in a certain place at a certain time to meet someone, witness something, or participate in God’s work in someone’s life?

God loves to orchestrate divine appointments. Simeon had been eagerly waiting for the Messiah. The Holy Spirit revealed to him that he would see the Messiah before he died. One day, the Spirit led him to the Temple. It happened to be the day Mary and Joseph brought the baby to the Temple, as the law required. Mere chance? I doubt it. It was a divine appointment.

Simeon saw them with the infant. He took the baby in his arms and praised God for fulfilling His promise. He had indeed lived to see the Messiah.

The Lord chose Simeon to see the salvation the Lord provided for all people. The Lord orchestrated events to make it possible for Simeon to be in the Temple on the same day as Mary and Joseph. When God chooses you, He also makes things happen you couldn’t imagine possible.

God has chosen you. He will work on your behalf to orchestrate the details. When you begin to experience these divine appointments, it will increase your faith in God’s ability to do what He says He will do. Not only are you chosen, but He will give you the faith you need to see things through.

Prayer

Lord, life seems like chaos sometimes. But from the beginning, You made order out of chaos when You created the world and all that is in it. There are no accidents or coincidences. You orchestrate the details of life to create divine appointments. I give You permission to create divine appointments for me. Help me to run into a person who needs a word of encouragement and a prayer. Help me genuinely see people the way You see them. Give me a heart to take advantage of “chance” meetings and help me see them as part of my role in Your story.
