December 20: Go This Way (Divine Guidance)

Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say,

“This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.

Isaiah 30:21

We’re all trying to find our way through life. We wonder what we want to be when we grow up. We wonder whom to marry. We wonder which job offer to take. All these things are like a meandering path through life and as we look at it, we wonder where it is leading us.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Jesus doesn’t just show us the way. He IS the way. If the path of our life doesn’t lead through Christ, it doesn’t go anywhere. True guidance only comes from God because He knows the way for us to follow.

Centuries earlier, Isaiah wrote of God’s guidance. “Your own ears will hear God.” Today, many people, even many Christians, mock the idea of hearing God’s voice. The fact is God does speak to us. It may or may not be an audible voice, but we’ll definitely hear it in our mind and spirit. According to Isaiah, receiving God’s guidance will be like hearing a voice right behind you saying, “Go this way. Turn right. Now turn left.” This might sound like GPS instructions, but the point is that God will show you the way to go if you are listening to His voice.

Simeon was in the Temple the day Mary and Joseph came to present the offerings. The Bible says, “That day the Spirit led him to the Temple” (Luke 2:27). This is the leading and guidance offered by God. It is often an inner prompting by God to get us in the right place at the right time.

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Following Jesus isn’t merely blind following. It is relational. We know God and He knows us so we learn to recognize His voice. We can distinguish the voice of God as clearly as you might recognize your father’s voice. You know his voice because you know him so well. It’s unmistakable. The same is true with God. When we know God intimately, we recognize His voice. But that doesn’t mean it is something to attain. Any believer in Christ can hear God’s voice. Learn to listen and silence the voice of doubt.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for guiding me through life. Thank you for showing me which way to go, even if I haven’t been clear on hearing from you in the past. I’d like to do better at hearing your voice so I can receive better guidance along the way. I will set aside time to listen to you and develop a relationship with you that involves two-way conversation. Thank you for wanting to have that kind of relationship with me. I’m so amazed at you.
