December 7: God Has Done Great Things for Me

Mary responded,

“Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed.

For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.

He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him.

His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.

He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.

He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.

He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful.

For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”

Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back to her own home.

Luke 1:46-56

Elizabeth’s Spirit-filled greeting caused Mary to break forth in her own verse of praise. It seems as if this is the moment where it all comes together for Mary. Yes, she accepted the message of the angel, but she had encountered resistance from others so it would be natural to waver. Now that she could see Elizabeth’s pregnancy, confirming the message of the angel in a tangible way, she was ready to accept the truth of her own special pregnancy.

Mary rejoices and leaves behind any doubts. She humbly thanks the Lord for noticing her, a lowly servant girl and she recognizes that He has given her an honor that will be recognized for generations to come.

While she elaborates on the mighty and wonderful things of God, perhaps the most important one is, “He has done great things for me.” In her case, a divine pregnancy is definitely “great things” but I think she is also referring to her life up to that point. Of all the things that have happened in her life, she could suddenly see God at work in all of it—her godly parents, her national heritage, her Joseph who she hoped would still marry her. All of it came from God. He was there all along, in every detail of life, and all of it led up to this moment.

Can you say, “God has done great things for me”? When you reflect on your life, can you see the hand of God at work, guiding, protecting, and grooming you for where you are now? Even if your present circumstances are challenging, can you see God in the midst of them? You may not know what God is up to, but you can be sure He is working out His plan in your life, even in the difficult parts—especially in the difficult parts.

Prayer

Lord, I trust You. I believe You have chosen me to be part of Your story. I don’t yet understand my role or purpose, but I trust You. When my circumstances seem challenging, at best, I will look for clues You are at work in the midst of the details. But even if I don’t see You at work, I will trust You to reveal Yourself and Your purpose in due time. Give me strength to do the difficult things You have chosen me to do and restore my faith in trusting You when I don’t see the big picture.
