I put off reading It Is Finished for a long time. It was lost on my Kindle among a hundred other unread titles. But it turned out to be a hidden gem. This book challenged my thinking, poked at spiritually sore spots, and prompted a shift in my spiritual life.

I loved his writing style. He’s easy to read and slightly irreverent, saying things like “Jesus was an interesting dude” or “Jesus threw a keg party.” I found phrases like that amusing and refreshing because that’s the kind of casual talk Jesus would have used.

From cover to cover, the book was about God’s grace. It delved into many misconceptions taught by churches today and he offered explanations from scripture to show the errors in modern thinking.

Occasionally, the author said things that took me back a bit, but as he unfolded the truth from scripture, I realized he was right, although I had never seen that way in scripture before.

Look at this mock exchange he sets up:

There seems to be this idea that God hates people until they believe in Him.

Well, what exactly are they supposed to believe about Him?

“That He loved them enough to die on the cross for their sins, of course.”

So, let me get this right…

God hates people until people believe that God loves them. Once people believe that God loves them, He then stops hating them, and starts loving them?

I, personally, have struggled with feeling God hasn’t provided everything I need, causing me to doubt His goodness and strive to do more to earn His favor. So it was a spiritual wake up call to read things like this:

“God was never our enemy, and we were never His enemy. But something happened in our minds when we believed the lie of the devil. What was this lie? It was the accusation that God was not good and had not provided everything we needed.”

–Blaise Foret, It Is Finished: Why you can quit religion and trust in Jesus

“Temptations from the enemy always find their root in this lie: you need to do something more in order to become something more because obviously God has been withholding something from you.”

–Blaise Foret, It Is Finished: Why you can quit religion and trust in Jesus

According to the author, sin is not the action but the unbelief that produced mistrust in God. Our actions, therefore, spring from our beliefs about our identity and God’s identity.

It Is Finished: Why you can quit religion and trust in Jesus is a book that will challenge you (in good ways) to examine your beliefs to make sure you are resting in God’s grace rather than striving in religious efforts to be good enough for God.
