Barnabas Encourager Award

Introducing the 2016 Biblical Character Awards The Biblical Character Awards are my way of featuring a handful of readers and recognizing them for their contribution to my life and ministry.   “They have been a wonderful encouragement to me, as they have been to you. You must show your appreciation to all who serve so well” (1 Corinthians 16:18).   Meet Claudia Hall McFie   Claudia Hall McFie (@adulcia), from Christchurch, New Zealand, always has an encouraging word, even though she, too, struggles at times with periods of depression. I think that makes her words extra special. For someone who is trying to push back the darkness to speak words of light and life to others—well, it gives me courage to dig a little deeper and press on. Not only does she share positive things on social media, but she personally engages with things I share on my blog or social media. I genuinely appreciate...

Squeezing Good Out of Bad by James N. Watkins

For many years I have been a fan of the wit and wisdom of James N. Watkins. He weaves his natural sense of humor into serious subjects with seamless ease. And trust me, his sense of humor is warped like mine! Check out this “stand up” routine Moses could have given with his back against the Red Sea: “Hey, how’s everybody tonight? Well ‘shofar,’ so good (rim shot). So, how ‘bout that Passover meal? Great menu if you have to be on the lamb (rim shot). Tough room. I’m dying like a firstborn in Egypt (rim shot).” -James N. Watkins, Squeezing Good Out of Bad   Having lived through many “lemons” in life, his words are also rich with the wisdom of personal experience and the compassion that grows out of it. “But we often ask, “How could a God of love and compassion let one of His children experience such sinful actions?” Perhaps in the same way He let His one and only Son experience such...

Despair. Discouragement. Disappointment. We each encounter these dark obstacles in life. Sometimes we become stuck in them. K.P. Yohannan offers some biblical advice on how to overcome discouragement. He begins by uncovering the deceptions involved in discouragement. This is the Deceiver at work, clouding our ability to see good and fixing our eyes on difficulties. The second chapter covers the reasons for discouragement. Sometimes we know what brought on our despair and other times we feel stuck in a fog. Identifying the reason for our discouragement helps s work through it to come out the other side quickly. “When we are depending on ourselves, God will often use discouraging circumstances to show us our need for Him.” –K.P. Yohannan, Discouragement: Reasons and Answers   After that, the author shows us the way to victory. He encourages the reader to not sit there and take it...

Stay Encouraged K.P. Yohannan 2014 50 pages   Stay Encouraged is a booklet by K.P. Yohannan to remind us that when discouragement comes (and it will), look to God. The author says every circumstance is “an opportunity to seek the Lord and rely on Him.” Discouragement is Satan’s favorite tool. As founder of Gospel for Asia, K.P. Yohannan says their ministry receives an average of 25 letters a day from people contemplating suicide. The person always waits until they hear back because people want to be encouraged. “Discouragement and depression happen to a lot of godly people,” writes Yohannan. He goes on to cite numerous godly examples in the Bible who were so depressed they wanted to die: Jonah, Elijah, and even Paul. There was a big difference between then and now. In the Bible, people didn’t try to hide discouragement like we do today. Instead, they came to God and told Him. Psalms is...
