Thankfulness is the acknowledgment that God can redeem every situation and make us more than triumphant in any circumstance.

–Margaret Feinberg, Wonderstruck, quote from .009: “Miracle on the Runway.”

I’ve followed Margaret Feinberg on Twitter for years so I’m embarrassed to admit I just read one of her books for the first time. Wonderstruck is a delightful read in an easy narrative style. Spiritual insights are not tagged on like ornaments, but rather as inevitable conclusions drawn from personal experience—an experience the reader now shares.

For example, after becoming newly acquainted with the tradition of Lent, she felt a desire to give it a try by giving up something—but what?

That year I felt an overwhelming sense that God asked me to give up something rather odd: prayer.

I resisted the impulse. Why would God ask me to give up prayer? What scripture instructs us to pray less? The Bible implores us to pray in every situation, to never stop praying. I batted down the ridiculous thought dozens of times, but the notion returned with ever increasing velocity. With Ash Wednesday a few days away, I began asking the Lord what he meant by the idea of giving up prayer for Lent. My sense was that God didn’t want me to give up all prayer, but lengthy prayers.

Giving in to the peculiar sacred echo, I committed to offer God only three-word prayers until Easter. The spiritual practice proved more difficult than I imagined.

–Margaret Feinberg, Wonderstruck, quote from .005: “Forgotten Longings.”

The insights Margaret Feinberg gains from this experience are really worthwhile. And I love the idea of three-word prayers! We all tend to waste words with God by reciting formulas and prayer-speak. Intentionally selecting the words that get to the meaning of our prayer is a discipline we could all benefit from practicing.

The book was loaded with practical insights gained from the trenches of life. The chapter on forgiveness held many gems of truth. Wonderstruck is definitely worth a read. Listen to this short video as Margaret Feinberg talks about the idea of being wonderstruck by God.

In case you’re wondering, Margaret Feinberg lives in beautiful Colorado. I’d be envious if I didn’t live in beautiful Montana.
